Co-founder TOMATO

This div will be replaced

John Warwicker is one of the founding members of the art / design collective Tomato, along with is his long-time friends and collaborators Karl Hyde and Rick Smith from Underworld. Their creative relationship spans many years prior to the conception of Tomato in 1991, when John was briefly a member of an early incarnation of Underworld in the early Eighties. Their collaboration has blossomed through the years, with John creatively overseeing many of Underworld’s various visual channels of output.

Separately, Underworld have released 7 albums to world-wide critical acclaim and are regarded by many as one of the most influential contemporary electronic music groups. Their music has also featured in several movies including Danny Boyle's films Trainspotting and Sunshine.

John's career has been equally impressive, with a reputation as one of the most original thinkers in design. He has also won many awards for his work including a Golden Globe, numerous awards from Art Directors’ Clubs across the globe and was the first foreign member of the Tokyo Type Directors Club. His work has also appeared in countless magazines and books across the world including the History of Graphic Design.

InFrame.tv caught up with John in the midst of producing 300 new concert films for the current Underworld world tour which kicked off in Malta in early May 09.

Lovely video guys! I've been a fan of John's work for many years and have had the pleasure of hearing him talk at several Tomato seminars over the years. It's always a great pleasure to hear him talk about his work.

John, Off thread I'm afraid but I wondered if you could help me contact Karl or/and Rick. I know you/they are extremely busy but I'd be very grateful. This goes back to the F days in the Marquee. I used to live in Milford Haven and was an avid fan travelling all over the U.K. I once went to a Marquee show with a t-shirt with Freur ironed on. Following that K and R soon had proper t-shirts and merchandise printed. I'm now happily married and living in Jakarta. We may well have met once or twice at the gigs or even at Tomato but being as we have both aged gracefully it is difficult to recognise you. All the best and I promise this is genuine. Martin p.s. The guys will remember me if you mention the Freur days and that it's Martin from Milford Haven.

Thank you for sharing your thought process in your art work. I have always been a fan of yours I enjoyed listening to your view on art; starting with when you said “art is like a catalyst an energy form”. When I first heard Underworld and seen the video the energy you described in your interview was what I took away from it; you are a inspiration to many electronic media artist out there.

Oh that ending brought back such memories for me watching Underworld at the Big Day Out. The visuals, the music, the drugs and that hot Aussie late summer evening Hmmm it was good.
