The Church

This div will be replaced

Marty Willson-Piper is one of the three founding members of the Australian band The Church. While busking his way around the globe in 1980 at the tender age of 21, the Liverpool born guitarist, saw one of the band's first Sydney gigs and soon joined as a full-time member alongside Steve Kilbey and Peter Koppes. Success came quickly for the band with their early single The Unguarded Moment becoming a hit single in Australia. Since that time the band has morphed, developed and built an international reputation for creating some of the most seamlessly beautiful and atmospheric songs of their generation. In 2008, a survey among readers of Melbourne newspaper The Age voted Under the Milky Way as the best Australian song of the last 21 years. In recent times the band has been in career high form with their recently released Untilted #23 album receiving a five star review in Rolling Stone and their live shows being some of the best of their career. We caught up with The Church at their December '09 show at The Corner Hotel and had a chat with avid record collector Marty at one of his fave Melbourne haunts Greville Records.

Great interview with Marty Willson-Piper. One of the best aspects of The Church is their commitment to eclecticism. Marty mentioned that, the last thing the band members would want to do next time in the studio, is to create another record just like the last. Pondering what I could be listening to next keeps me on the edge of my seat--and as a devoted fan, I am never disappointed.

My favorite band. They still do great live shows, at a time when bands about the same age start sucking, or have sucked for a while. Friendly chaps, too.

As a musician myself I totally appreciate and I am constantly inspired by The Church. Their ability to continuously create timeless, unique and relevant songs is unparallel. They are a testament to staying true to yourself whether is in your career or your life. They are my heros!!!

Well done Matt and crew. The Church are criminally underrated. I've been a devoted fan for many years. Your show at The Gov recently was incredible. The ARIA Hall of Fame beckons.

MWP is such a legend! Both him and Peter Koppes have been so influential with their guitar sounds and interplay. Just an awesome band thanks for posting!

Wonderful to see this video, thanks so much for making it! It's very interesting to see Marty's thoughts on the band, and I enjoyed the commentary on their songwriting process. They must eat up a lot of studio time :)

I saw The Church on Apr. 27, 2010 at Ramshead on stage in Annapolis, Maryland. This was my first time seeing them dispute being a fan since the "Starfish" album in '88, when I was 15. Every time they would come around in the past, I always had some type of emergency, where I could not go and would just have to eat the ticket, or try to get rid of it. I thought it was a curse. Never the less, I finely saw them on there 30th yr, anniversary acoustic tour, and what a show it was. Scaled down and very personal for the audience. Different versions of some of the songs and a couple new ones. I got to meet Marty, Pete and Tim after the show. I just want to thank them for taking the time to meet everyone after the show. It means the world to a fan, for a band to do that. When a bands music has such an impact on someone's life, not just as an inspiration, but almost as like a family member, where the music is growing with the individual as he or she matures, it becomes a part of them in there development of life, and helps make them the people that they become. I hope to see them in the future, maybe, "back in Annapolis, the weather is ridiculous, what's it all leading to" (if you are familiar with the area, you can relate) Thank You!!!! Good luck gentlemen, and be blessed. George Desch II
